I don’t believe that is the intention of the Bill. You are correct that we don’t believe this will be an issue in Leicester as we have well developed plans in place to manage excess deaths locally, and I’m confident we can meet any demand for burials arising from Covid-19. It might be worth taking this opportunity to remind the community that since 2015 we have been digging most coffined graves to accommodate a second family burial in each grave, this can only be done with the written consent of the registered grave owner. Making use of this additional burial space, which does not involve disturbing the previous burial in the grave, will greatly increase the capacity for burials at Saffron Hill Cemetery, and save families the cost of buying another grave.
